About  Servals

Servals are the wild ancestor of the domestic hybrid breed Savannah cat.  Servals are slender with a very streamlined appearance. They are cats with big ears, long legs, and black spotted coats with gold toned backgrounds.  Servals typically weigh between 20 and 40 pounds and stand approximately 20 inches at the shoulders.  Servals are from Africa, south of the Sahara. They usually live in areas with tall grass, especially near rivers or streams. They prey on rodents, birds, hares, lizards and sometimes larger animals like young antelope.  As a result of their large ears, their hearing is exceptional. They locate prey by listening. Their hearing is so acute they are able to detect tunneling rodents underground, which they dig up and eat. Their long necks and legs, combined with their small heads, give them distinct advantages when hunting in tall grasses. They are capable of great leaps for their size and have been seen to jump 10 feet straight up to take a bird out of the air.   The exotic looks and traits of the Serval are the inspiration behind the Savannah breed.

About Savannahs

Savannah is the name given to a relatively new breed of domestic cat that has been created by the breeding of a Serval to a domestic cat. Savannahs may also be referred to as Serval hybrids. The purpose of the breed is to provide people with a large cat that looks like a Serval in body composition and coat pattern, but acts like a domestic. The beauty of the Serval is the inspiration behind the Savannah breed. Not only is their coat beautiful, but also their body type and personality. Savannahs are smaller and more manageable than Servals and do not require any special diets or facilities. Savannahs are bred to possess the look of the Serval, but are considered domestic. Savannahs are the largest hybrid feline available. They are excellent with other pets and children. Savannahs are extremely intelligent and "talk" quite often. They create strong bonds with their owners.
